Job Purpose 

We are seeking a Vice President of Software Engineering to lead our software engineering and quality assurance teams to develop, deliver, and maintain Boardable's software as a service (SaaS) product that helps nonprofits collaborate with their staff, board, and committees. This role is responsible for managing and growing our remote engineering team; instituting processes to maximize the team's capacity while predictably delivering high quality, secure products; driving the direction of our cloud infrastructure to ensure scalability and reliability; and working with key stakeholders to deliver an amazing experience that delights our customers.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a high-performing, geographically distributed engineering team that is grounded on a culture of trust, ownership, and innovation.
  • Ensure that the engineering team makes sustainable technical and architectural decisions with minimal bottlenecks or roadblocks.
  • Build and foster a culture of engineering excellence and accountability.
  • Serve as a key partner and cross-functional leader to the Senior Leadership Team and other departments within the company.
  • Provide guidance and oversight for engineering teams to solve a class of problems highly technical in nature.
  • Collaborate with Recruiting/HR to identify, attract, and hire world-class engineering talent.
  • Create, communicate, and execute a clear technical vision that aligns with the company's strategy.
  • Provide hands-on technical expertise throughout the product life cycle including design, implementation, and delivery of scalable build/test/release infrastructure.
  • Translate strategy into product reality across multiple technology streams to deliver a single product experience to the market.
  • Provide guidance on designing software architectures for scalability, reliability, and performance in a regulated environment.

Experience/Education/Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer information systems, software engineering, mathematics, related field of study, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in managing and growing software engineering teams.
  • 10+ years of software development experience, leveraging microservice concepts, design patterns, data structures, and algorithms, utilizing scripting languages (Node.js, PHP, Python) and advanced SQL.
  • Experience in software development life cycle and agile methodologies including Basecamp’s Shape Up.
  • A track record of managing and growing a geographically distributed team.
  • Previous experience rapidly scaling an engineering team at a start-up is a plus.
  • Preferred experience building cloud infrastructure using Amazon Web Services to host highly available SaaS products
  • Experience integrating third-party technologies such as Stripe, PDF vendors, and WebRTC vendors
  • Background in delivering mobile and tablet applications

  • An entrepreneurial and mission-focused mindset
  • Nonprofit and/or board experience a plus
